In each of the generators, there was a set standard of conventions each genre had to follow. The comic strip consisted of multiple boxes and each one added on to the last. Each box helped the story or joke move forward. The comics were also colorful and pretty short. There was not a lot of text in each box. It seemed to keep text to a minimal amount in every scene. The scenes are either very comedic or very full of action. At times the slides do not make sense, I think that is because the generator is random and is just following the conventions that a comic must have separate scenes, scenes that build on each other, and there has to be colors.
The computer science paper generator also made up stuff that did not completely make sense. Even though it did not make sense, it still looked the part. The conventions of the paper were that it had to have certain parts and titles. All of the papers had a title, abstract, intro, related work, methodology, implementation, analysis and interpretation, conclusion, and references. It is similar to any science piece of writing. The papers also contained lots of graphs and charts to make it seem more scientific and make the data easier to interpret. What also made it seem realistic was the fact that everything was plain and simple. nothing really stood out, nothing had color, everything was black and white and followed the conventions of looking like a boring old research paper.
The final generator was the meme generator. All the memes were funny, short, and had only one or two pictures. The memes use the image to make their “point” and make it in a sarcastic or punny way. All the genres had the same features, just different words or pictures. This is the same for websites that help people to create resumes. In these resume generator sites, one simply puts down the information needed and the website takes what it gets and puts it together following the format of a typical business resume. Another generating website is easybib.com, it helps students to make bibliographies quickly. You simply mark what format you want, MLA, APA, Chicago, or any other, and type in the info asked if you have it. Even with missing information you can still make a decent looking bibliography. By studying these generators, one can better understand what a genre is. If they look at all of these generators, they will eventually notice how every single genre looks the same but if slightly different from one to the next.
Hey, I thought you did a great job getting straight to the point of what each of the generator did. I also did not know there was a resume generator out there to help one structure their own resume! I may look into using one in the future! After analyzing these different generators, who knew these generators could actually could come in handy someday? On the other hand, I just thought this blog could have been more organized. The blog flows, but I had a hard time distinguishing between the different paragraphs and the different topics. Adding an indentation or adding a space in between paragraphs would have been a bit helpful. Aside from that, maybe elaborate more about how or why a specific conventions seems to follow the certain genre. Overall, I think you have the right, general idea and have an understanding of how to distinguish the different convention is a particular genre.
ReplyDeleteRaul,
ReplyDeleteCool bio. That’s pretty badass that you’re a boxer.
PB1B: You pinpointed the major features of the SciGen piece. Nice job. However, I was hoping you might get more specific on the comic genre. For instance, does it adhere to the standard audience for what most folks likely expect for a cartoon? I don’t think so, so stating that and incorporating quotes and/or describing the imagery of the scene could really help you drive that “rhetorical observation” home. How about it’s ultimate effect on you: did it “persuade’ you in finding it humorous? Well, that’s up for you to decide, but supplying your reader with evidence is “key” when you want to drive these claims home.
For the meme: what kinds of pictures are typically used? Does this give us clues into the expectations for this genre? Also, if you look at it super-closely/deeply, you’ll notice that they’ve got a pretty standard setup/punchline (top/bottom).
Easybib is definitely a genre generator!
